Mathias Duhamel is a French artist born in Amiens in 1956. After training at the School of Fine Arts in Amiens and subsequently at the School of Applied Arts in Paris, he pursued an eclectic, self-taught artistic path before dedicating himself to painting in 2001. An artist who defies categorization due to the diversity of styles he explores, he began creating unique performances in 2006 that blend painting and music—events he calls "Concerts de Peinture ». Over the course of more than twenty years, he has performed on stage with various orchestras in venues ranging from the Philharmonie de Paris to Moscow, Atlanta, and New York. Music has influenced his approach to painting, leading him to seek a way to make his canvases as ephemeral as the music itself. He takes this analogy a step further by "silencing" his paintings—covering them with cotton strips at the end of concerts—thereby removing the finished subject from the audience's view just as the final musical notes fade away. In 2026, Mathias Duhamel made a radical shift, choosing to focus on the concept of "Silences," though this time with subjects created in the studio and without musicians. He has been developing a minimalist, abstract series rooted in his "live" performance experience, returning to a permanent material form for his artworks. He has lived and worked in Lille since 1984.
